The Great Race is the world’s premiere old car rally and will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles through the county.
Great Race participants will make a “pit stop” in Downtown Oroville along Myers Street from Miner’s Alley to Robinson Street. The first car is expected to arrive at 2:30 p.m. in front of the Historic Oroville State Theatre cars will be arriving and leaving between the hours of 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., with more than two-dozen on hand at any one
Teams and cars will come from Japan, England, Germany, Canada and every corner of the United States. The entire entourage supporting the race boasts more than 500 people. Only cars built in 1974 or earlier are eligible to compete for the $150,000 total purse. The oldest cars registered for this year’s event are the 1916 Hudson Pikes Peak Hillclimber, a 1916 Phaeton, a 1917 Peerless Racer, and a chain-driven 1918 American LaFrance Speedster.
As part of the “pit stop” festivities, the Oro Dam Cruisers Car Club will have a park-in adjacent to the Great Race stop so visitors can spend the afternoon swooning over the classic cars. The State Theatre will be hosting the drivers and their co-pilots for a quick snack as they stretch their legs in the historic downtown. Once the drivers depart from Oroville they will wind their way to Downtown Chico for judging of that event leg.
